Radiator cold at the bottom: sludge and poor circulation
Radiator hot at the top but cold at the bottom? It is usually sludge, and bleeding will not fix it. What causes it, what you can check and when a flush is needed.

A radiator that is hot at the top but cold at the bottom usually has sludge, a build-up of rust and debris that settles at the bottom and blocks the flow of hot water. Bleeding will not fix it, because the problem is not air. A heating engineer can flush the radiator or the whole system and fit or clean a magnetic filter to stop it coming back.
Quick guide: cold at the top means air (bleed it). Cold at the bottom means sludge (needs flushing). Cold all over while others are hot usually means a stuck valve.
What it could be and what to do
Sludge build-up Engineer needed
Likely cause: Rust and debris from inside the pipes and radiators settle at the bottom of the radiator. Worcester Bosch says a cold bottom is usually caused by sludge or poor water circulation.
What to do: Feel along the bottom with the heating on. If several radiators are cold at the bottom, the whole system may need a flush. Book a heating engineer to check and quote before any work.
Poor circulation You may be able to fix this
Likely cause: If hot water is not being pushed through the radiator properly, the lower part stays cool. This can come from a partly closed valve, a weak pump or an unbalanced system.
What to do: Check that the valves at both ends of the radiator are open. If other radiators are also slow to heat, see our guide to radiators that are not heating evenly.
Low inhibitor in the system Engineer needed
Likely cause: Inhibitor is a chemical added to the heating water to slow corrosion. HomeServe advises checking inhibitor levels regularly, because without it rust and sludge form faster.
What to do: Ask about inhibitor and a magnetic filter at your next boiler service. An engineer can test the water and top it up after any flush.
Safe radiator checks you can do
These are the checks we suggest without an engineer. Never open the boiler casing.
Heating off first: turn the heating off and let radiators cool before you bleed them or touch a valve. The water can scald.
Feel the radiator: with the heating on, note whether it is cold at the top, the bottom or all over. That tells you which page above to use.
Valves open: check the thermostatic valve is turned up and the lockshield at the other end is not closed.
Bleed: open the bleed valve slightly with a radiator key, catch the water and close it when water flows steadily.
Pressure: after bleeding, check the boiler gauge shows about 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, and top up as your manual shows. Low boiler pressure guide →

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Helpful answers before you call.
Will bleeding fix a radiator that is cold at the bottom?
No. A cold top means air, which bleeding fixes. A cold bottom usually means sludge, which needs the radiator or system flushed by a heating engineer.
Do I need a powerflush?
Not always. If one radiator is affected, it can often be removed and flushed on its own. If several radiators are cold at the bottom, or the boiler is noisy too, a system flush may be needed. We will check and agree the price before any work.
