If you smell gas or think there is a gas leak, call the free National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It is open 24 hours a day. In Edinburgh and the Lothians, SGN runs the gas network and sends an engineer to make it safe.

If you smell gas
- Open windows and doors to let the gas out.
- Turn off the gas supply at the meter, and any gas appliances, if you can do so safely.
- Do not smoke or use any naked flame.
- Do not touch electrical switches. Switching anything on or off could ignite the gas.
- Do not go into a cellar, even if the meter is there.
- Leave the building and call 0800 111 999 from outside.
After the emergency service has made it safe
The emergency engineer makes the supply safe. They do not usually repair your boiler, cooker or pipework. Any appliance they cap off must be checked and repaired by a Gas Safe registered engineer before it is used again.

Who do I call if I smell gas in Edinburgh?

Can a plumber fix a gas leak?
Call 0800 111 999 first. Once the emergency engineer has made the supply safe, a Gas Safe registered engineer can find and repair the faulty appliance or pipework.
Should I turn off the gas at the meter?
SGN advises turning off the gas at the meter if you can do so safely. Do not go into a cellar to reach it.
Prefer to book on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp booking requests are for weekday daytime visits, Monday to Friday within 7am–7pm, Edinburgh local time. One same-day slot is offered each weekday, at least 3 hours ahead; for a same-day booking, call 0131 210 0505 to confirm.
Choose an available date and then a two-hour time window in the chat. Bookings are provisional until the plumber confirms. The work and price must be discussed and agreed before work starts.
