Start with a factual timeline
Write down when the symptom began, what work you know was taking place and where it was happening. Distinguish your own renovation, work in another flat, external excavation and a published water-network notice. Events occurring at the same time are useful context; that timing alone does not prove causation.
Compare the affected outlets
Explain whether one fitting, the whole home or neighbouring properties appear affected. Describe observations you already have without repeatedly running a leaking fixture. A change at one kitchen tap needs a different enquiry from several homes reporting loss of supply, but neither pattern on its own confirms the fault location.
Use live information for an area-wide incident
Check Scottish Water’s current postcode information and keep the reference or notice relevant to the time of your symptoms. Follow the provider’s instructions for that incident rather than generic advice copied from an old notice. This website does not display live network status or confirm that work is underway at your address.
Coordinate access with the person managing the work
If renovation is active, tell the site contact about the observation and explain any restricted rooms, exposed services or temporary isolation. A plumbing visit must be scoped around authorised access. Do not enter a neighbour’s work area, remove protective coverings or operate temporary controls to investigate the relationship yourself.
Ask for observations rather than blame
Photographs, dates, the inspected component and the tests actually carried out are more useful than a statement that nearby works must be responsible. Ask how findings and limitations can be recorded before booking. Liability, compensation and insurance decisions require the relevant parties and advice, beyond a general service enquiry.
