Describe the house, then the actual affected space

Terraced, semi-detached and detached describe building forms, not a guaranteed plumbing arrangement. Give the affected floor, fitting and access route. A detached or “independent” house may still have records or neighbouring connections that need checking; an adjoining wall does not establish that a drain is shared.

Rear access in a terrace

If the problem is behind the house, explain any passage, gate or route through occupied rooms. Say whether another owner controls access rather than assuming the front address grants entry to the rear ground. A drainage investigation needs a usable, authorised starting point; plot shape cannot establish pipe ownership.

A semi-detached home with an extension

Mention changes to kitchens, bathrooms or outside drainage and provide genuine records if available. Explain whether the adjoining property has reported a related symptom, without claiming the two reports have the same cause. Ask how the proposed investigation would distinguish the affected route before selecting repair work.

A detached home with several outlets or buildings

For a garage supply, annex or garden fitting, identify what it serves and whether a known isolator affects it. Do not draw unknown buried connections as fact or assume a private drainage system because the garden is large. Agree investigation scope before excavation or disturbance of finished surfaces.

Make the appointment fit the access

Tell the team which entrance reaches the fault, whether rooms can stay unused and who approves further work. If another property must be involved, arrange its contact rather than making a promise on its behalf. Use the relevant symptom service alongside this layout guide to prepare the actual enquiry.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Helpful answers before you call.

Does an adjoining wall prove a shared drain?

No. Use actual observations, records and appropriate advice to establish the drainage arrangements.

Is an independent house a separate plumbing category?

Customers may use that phrase for a detached home. Explain the actual layout, outlets and access rather than relying on the label.

What matters about a later extension?

Describe the changed rooms or fixtures and available records. An extension is useful history without proving the cause of a present fault.
