If your stopcock will not turn, do not force it: Which? Trusted Traders warns too much force can snap the spindle. Look for an isolation valve closer to the leak instead, then try the outside stop tap. If water is escaping and nothing will turn, call an emergency plumber. Once the leak is fixed, have the stopcock replaced so it works next time.

Water near electrics? Do not touch wet switches, sockets or light fittings. Switch off at the consumer unit only if you can reach it without standing in water. Water pouring in? Turn off the stopcock: find your stopcock →

What it could be and what to do

Seized with scale You may be able to fix this

Likely cause: Which? Trusted Traders says stuck valves are usually clogged with scale and debris rather than rust, and advises against oil or WD40.

What to do: Try gentle, steady pressure by hand or with a cloth for grip. Light leverage with a spanner only. Stop if it does not move.

Use an isolation valve instead You may be able to fix this

Likely cause: Many sinks, toilets and appliances have their own small valve on the pipe, which shuts off just that fitting.

What to do: Look on the pipes under the sink, by the toilet cistern or behind the washing machine. Turn the slot a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver so it is across the pipe.

Outside stop tap Engineer needed

Likely cause: Most homes have another valve, sometimes called the toby, under a small metal cover in the pavement or garden. In flats it may be shared.

What to do: Only use it if you can reach it safely. In a shared building, warn neighbours before turning it off. If it is stuck too, contact Scottish Water on 0800 0778 778.

Spindle snapped or valve leaking Engineer needed

Likely cause: A forced or very old stopcock can break or leak from the spindle.

What to do: Call an emergency plumber. Which? suggests testing your stopcock once a year and replacing it if it is hard to turn.

Safe checks you can do first

These are the checks we suggest before a plumber arrives. Stop if anything feels unsafe.

  1. Stop the water: use the small isolation valve on the pipe to the fitting if there is one, or the main stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink. Stopcock finder →
  2. Electrics: keep away from anything wet and electrical. Get an electrician to check before switching back on.
  3. Is it just you? Ask neighbours. No water or brown water in the whole street is usually Scottish Water: 0800 0778 778, free, 24 hours.
  4. Contain it: buckets, towels and moving belongings limit the damage. In a flat, warn the neighbour below.
  5. Photos: take photos and video before you clear up, for your insurer or landlord.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Helpful answers before you call.

What do I do if my stopcock will not turn?

Do not force it. Shut off the isolation valve nearest the leak if there is one, or try the outside stop tap. If water is still escaping, call an emergency plumber on 0131 210 0505.

Can I use WD40 on a stuck stopcock?

Which? Trusted Traders advises against it, because stuck valves are usually blocked with scale rather than rust, and oil can make the valve slippery.
