With the number of homes in Rosewell doubling in 20 years, many houses here have modern combi boilers. A pressure gauge that keeps falling is one of the most common problems with them, and it usually has a findable cause.

What a falling pressure gauge means
A sealed heating system should hold its pressure, usually between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold. If you have to top it up every few days, water is escaping somewhere. Look for drips at radiator valves, damp carpet under radiators and staining under the boiler.
Some boilers release water through a pressure relief pipe that runs outside. Check whether that pipe is dripping or has left a damp mark on the wall. If it is, the system may be over-pressurising, which needs a heating engineer.
When to stop topping up
Topping up again and again adds fresh water and air to the system. If the pressure drops more than once a week, book a repair rather than continuing to refill it. Gas work on the boiler itself must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Is it safe to keep using the boiler if the pressure is low?
Most boilers lock out when pressure is too low, so they protect themselves. Topping up once is fine; repeated losses need investigating.
Will the builder's warranty cover this?
If your home is still within its warranty period, contact the developer first. Some defects in new heating systems are covered.
