Lasswade's houses step down the sides of the North Esk valley, and many drains have a long way to travel before they reach the sewer. That affects how a blockage shows up and where it is best cleared from.

Why a slope changes how a blockage behaves
On a steep site, waste moves fast through the upper part of a drain and slows where the pipe levels out or changes direction. Debris tends to settle at those points, often well away from the house. A sink that empties slowly, followed later by a gurgling toilet, usually means the restriction is further down the line.
Find your inspection chamber covers before you call. Lift one only if it is safe to do so, and tell us whether it is full of water or empty. A full chamber points to a blockage downstream of it; an empty one suggests the problem is between that chamber and the house.
Converted buildings in the village
Lasswade has several converted older buildings, including the 1875 board school, now flats. In a conversion, the drains were added to suit the new layout, so do not assume they follow the original building. Ask your factor for any drainage plan they hold.

Chemical unblockers rarely reach a blockage far down a drain and can sit in the pipe. If more than one fixture is affected, it is better to have the drain cleared mechanically.
Who is responsible for a shared drain in a converted building?
Usually all the owners it serves, until it joins the public sewer. Your title deeds or factor can confirm how costs are shared.
