Basement water in a Blackford house: leak or groundwater?
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses under Blackford Hill have cellars or basements. When water appears there, it may be from a pipe, from drains backing up or from the ground, and each needs a different fix.

Reading the signs
Clean water that keeps coming whether or not it has rained suggests a supply pipe leak. Dirty or smelly water that appears when toilets are flushed points to a drain problem. Water that seeps in after heavy rain and stops in dry weather is more likely groundwater or surface water.
Turn off the stopcock for a few hours. If the water stops, the supply is the likely source.
What to tell us
Say when the water first appeared, whether it is clean or dirty and whether it changes with rain or use. Photos help. Keep away from wet electrical equipment.
